LAS TABLAS, head quarter of Los Santos province
Las Tablas is a city of approximate 10,000 inhabitants spread over 170,000 acres.
The province of Los Santos is considered the cradle of one of the maximum expressions of Panamanian folklore, in the peninsula of Azuero. In this area, the role played by the district of Las Tablas was preponderant.
Places like Guararé, Santo Domingo, La Palma, San José, among others, are recognized for their laborious work in the confection of the typical national costume, the pollera. They are also made with very high quality camisillas, sombreros pintaos and cutarras, shoes worn by the peasants. However, the making of jewelry and accessories that are part of the pollera has been gradually abandoned in Las Tablas, leaving it only to a small group of elderly people who dedicate themselves to this work. The best carnivals in the country are held here.
The district of Las Tablas is famous for being the cradle and guardian of varied rhythms of vernacular music and its categories. Some of them are: The Panamanian cumbia, the tamborito, religious songs (salves and hymns that date from the time of the Spanish Colony), the saloma (break and game of male and female voices), the tenth, the murga, old verses, couplets popular and other musical genres. It is the land where the violin and the flute have always been skillfully performed, resulting in great jewels of Panamanian folk music such as the famous Panamanian danzones, closed cumbias, atravesaos, denesas and puntos, to name a few. These were the dances of the locals in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The “tamboreros” of the village of Las Tablas enjoy great prestige, thanks to their skill at redoubling with their hands these percussion instruments, elaborated in an artisan way in Las Tablas and in San José (in the corregimiento of Las Tablas).
The main events in Las Tablas are:
- The thousand polleras defile in January
- Carnival in February
- Holy Week in April
- The procession of Virgo Santa Librada in July
- The Nation’s days in November
