THE VALLEY OF ANTON:
The Valley of Antón is a town located in the northeastern area of the corregimiento of the same name, in the province of Coclé, Panama. It is a tourist country village of 7,602 inhabitants (2000 Census).
According to geologists, El Valle is a crater or caldera of a volcano, which is why in its surroundings it is limited to the north by Cerro Pajita, Gaital and Cara Coral with heights of 1,000 meters above sea level, to the south of Cerro Cara Iguana and Cerro Guacamaya (Cerro la Huaca) with 800 meters above sea level; to the west India Dormida; and to the east Cerro Tagua with 800 meters above sea level.
The Valley has a main road, called Central Avenue or Central Street, which runs East-West through the town. An important point is the Sunday public market, which is visited by Panamanians who live in the region. The Valley has a small museum, as well as a small zoo, a serpentarium, a butterfly exposition, and a beautiful garden that exhibits more than a hundred species of orchids from the locality.
The town is a popular weekend getaway for residents of Panama City. Popular activities in the area include camping in established areas, trekking, horseback riding, and natural thermals pools.
The town is 27 kilometers from the Interamerican highway along a two-lane road. Buses to Panama City are frequent and take approximately 2 hours. To reach other locations in Panama, it is usually necessary to take a bus at the Albrook terminal that will take you for $ 4.25 to this beautiful place.
Due to its elevation around 600 meters above sea level it has a less warm climate than in the coastal lands. Natural attractions near El Valle include the El Macho waterfall, a group of small thermal pools, a zoological garden called “El Nispero” that includes collections of anuran amphibians. The area around the city is also known to be one of the habitats of the Panamanian golden frog, endemic species in danger of extinction. Some of the forests around the city are protected areas. The Valley is also known as the place of the Sleeping India, name given to the shape of a mountain, because it presents the shape of the figure of a woman lying on her back and some writers consider it as a sanctuary for meditation.
